Weekend Update

Proof!
I'm back in Jaipur! As my host buppa said tonight at dinner, "If you come to India without seeing the Taj Mahal, you haven't seen India at all." After a busy week of sleepovers, afternoons out, and a program-hosted fort party, I took off at 9 AM Saturday morning to make an overnight trip to Agra with 16 of my fellow abroad studiers. So, yes, now I have been to the Taj Mahal!

I am very exhausted from the drives, coordinating the trip, and making sure we got from one place to another safely, but proud to have taken the initiative to make use of a spare weekend when we have one. I am also a little bit sick (uh-oh!). Tomorrow night, our whole program leaves for a week excursion to Dehradun and Rishikesh, so hold tight while I venture even further away from civilization. Wish me luck!

  1. Hi Olivia... glad to get connected to your Blog.
How long are you there? Larry and I are just back from Thailand and it was amazing to see how the Queen Mother instituted the use of bottled water throughout the country for all cooking, food prep and drinking. We ate without any problems whatsoever. Amazing what one woman can do when she sets her mind to it.
Question: What access to birth control do Indian women have?

  2. Hello! I'm happy that the link got to you! Glad to hear that you made it safely back to the States without too many health scares - 3 of the students here got diagnosed with E.coli this week so I am appreciating my own good health.
To answer your question, I still don't really know. We tried to talk about it early on in class, as the soap packets that hang from the roadside snack shops strongly resemble condom packaging, but we didn't make very much headway. The basic message was that birth control is somewhat available at the independent 'chemists' (pharmacies) but there are strong social taboos for purchasing (and even seeing any methods at the store). I will try to get a better answer for you!
